There’s another new year around the corner. While, in the grand scheme of things, one day is just like every other day, January 1st is the day that our calendars begin again and some people attach importance to it because of that. A popular custom is to make New Year’s Resolutions. If you are going to make resolutions for this coming year, and even if you aren’t, one good idea is to read through the Bible at least once. The Bible is a wonderful book that contains information able to make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3.15). It is the living and abiding word of God which gives us the information we need to purify our souls through obedience and to be born again to a living hope (1 Peter 1.22-23). To help hide the word of the Lord in our hearts, we’ve developed a year long Bible Reading Plan for 2009. There are also six month, three month and one month plans that will be available shortly for the entire Bible, the Old Testament or New Testament only. However, I’d like to go over some of the features for the year long plan and answer the question: Why use this reading plan? Firstly, it’s free. There’s nothing to buy and everything you need to help study the Bible will be made available for you both online (www.BloggingTheBible.com) and in the foyer.
Secondly, at the website listed above, there will be a blog that goes through the daily readings. You can also make comments on the site for each daily reading, so rather than a year long “reading plan”, we have a year long Bible study. We can study together, read together and grow together. It doesn’t get much better than that. Thirdly, there will also be a reading journal provided. You will be able to make notes about important passages or things you notice. This way we’re not just reading, we’re studying, too. Fourthly, this reading plan is intelligently chronological. The books in our Bibles are not arranged in chronological order. This can make reading through the prophets somewhat confusing because the prophecies aren’t located next the events that are being prophesied about. This reading arranges the Old and New Testaments so that everything is presented chronologically. If you’ve ever had problems sorting through Biblical history, then this reading plan will help put everything in order.
Fifthly, it’s easy to read. Many reading plans try to squeeze too much information into too small a space. Not only is this confusing, but it makes it very difficult to read. The print in our reading plan is large enough for nearly everyone to read...without glasses. Along with being easy to read, it is available in nearly any format. If you forget to bring it with you on summer vacation, you can download it from our website, view it online, print it from any location, or even have it e-mailed to you. Anyway you want it, you got it.
Finally, our reading plan will make you feel good about yourself, help you sleep better at night and feel more confident everyday. Actually, it won’t do any of those things, but the word of God will. If we make it a point to read through and study the Bible every day, then the sword of the Lord will begin to make a difference in our lives. Hunger for the word of God; devour it, seek it, love it, live it.
