Yesterday, as I was walking through the parking lot, I noticed a military jet flying quickly through the sky making a loud roar as it went over me.  While it’s something I don’t often see I couldn’t help but feel a sense of security from the sight, knowing that our military is training and watching the skies for the protection of our nation.  Sometimes physical protections like our police, our military, or even our banking system gives us a sense of security that is fragile at best.

We need security that is based on God, not objects or people in this life.  “You are proud because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains.  “Who can ever reach us way up here?”  you ask boastfully.  Don’t fool yourselves!” (Obadiah 1:3)  The Edomites felt secure and they were proud of their own self-sufficiency.  But they were only fooling themselves because there is no lasting security apart from God. Matthew 6:19 tells us “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  Possessions and people can disappear in a moment, but God does not change.  Only He can supply true security.

We have the security that comes from knowing that we have eternal life. 1 John 5:11 reads, “This is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life in His Son.  So whoever has God’s Son has life; whoever does not have His Son does not have life.”  Some people hope that they will receive eternal life.  John says we can know we have it.  Our certainty is based on God’s promise that He will give us eternal life through His Son. You can have a true sense of security knowing that you have eternal life. We have something better to look forward to. 

Let’s not put all of our efforts into the “securities” of this life rather let’s look to the wisdom from above.  Let’s stop worrying about every time the stock market moves or if a storm is heading this way.  Let’s put our faith and worries in the One who never changes and the One who we can ultimately have full security in.
